Nick and Barbara: Adventures in the Development of Materials Characterization Techniques

Amy Walker

University of Texas at Dallas, 800 W. Campbell Rd, TX 75080 Richardson, United States

For many years Nick Winograd and Barbara Garrison have been at the forefront of the development of materials characterization techniques, in particular SIMS. In this talk we shall describe some of the studies which have been inspired by Nick’s and Barbara’s many insights. Examples discussed include the development of ionic liquid matrix-enhanced secondary ion mass spectrometry (IL ME-SIMS), the use of Ar giant gas clusters for the depth profiling of metal oxide thin films, and the development of maximum a posteriori (MAP) reconstruction of SIMS and XPS data.
